Dre Site C – Shredding

We are currently trialling the McCloskey es-250 tracked primary shredder in our site C waste transfer station here at Challonsleigh.

shredding

So far, the trials have indicated that the machine can process a wide range of waste materials in an efficient and expedient manner of up to 100 tons per hour, (material dependent).

The machine is also extremely mobile and easy to manoeuvre which allows us to quickly process the incoming waste, irrespective of where it is discharged in the storage sheds.

FIRE RISK

No doubt you will have seen examples on the national or local news channels of fires raging in waste transfer stations. Some of these fires are as a direct result of spontaneous combustion occurring in the heaped piles of mixed waste. This is an omnipresent risk that must be controlled by continuously turning the waste or better still sending it off-site as quickly as possible.

However, not all fires are started this way. A greater risk of fire on our site has now been identified from Lithium batteries. Despite our best efforts to halt the acceptance of such wastes, they are extremely difficult to see because of their small size. On occasions, they have been processed with other waste through the shredder which may damage the batteries and cause them to combust. It is unfortunate that something that was intended to be technologically efficient turns out to be a significant and ever-present risk at the end of its useful life.
